Flint Kids Read

Under the name Flint Kids Read, early childhood service providers in the education, library, university and medical communities are collaborating as members of the Flint and Genesee Literacy Network on a comprehensive approach to address the needs of Flint children with an emphasis on ensuring that every child in Flint will enter kindergarten healthy and ready to read. The purpose of Flint Kids Read is to provide children and childcare providers, teachers home visitors and parents access to age-appropriate reading materials to establish a strong educational foundation for early life. Flint Kids Read supports families and children through coordination of services, provision of training and language/literacy tools, family engagement activities, and with classroom and family support to ensure that Flint children are ready to succeed in school.

Who Participates in Flint Kids Read?

The Flint Kids Read program is coordinated with the internationally recognized Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and offers a comprehensive family literacy component. With the help of our local Imagination Library initiative Parents of children residing in zip codes 48501-07 and 48532 can enroll their child into the Imagination Library and receive a book each month to the home of each registered child (birth through five years of age) at no cost to the family. Children of different ages receive different titles; the books are carefully selected and are the children’s to keep.
