Storytelling Contest Official Rules

 

1. Eligibility

FGLN’s Storytelling Contest is open to all youth, grades Pre-K-12, of Flint & Genesee County. The Contest is subject to federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

a.  Youth Entrants (3-18) must submit parent or guardian permission on the Contest Entry Form.

B. Entrants who submit a video entry must also have parent or guardian permission on the Media and Video Release section.

2. Sponsors/Partners

Prizes for the Contest will be sponsored by various community partners, to be posted after the contest. The contest will be judged by a panel of volunteers, including members of the Flint and Genesee Literacy Network.

3. Agreement to Official Rules

Participation in the Contest constitutes entrants' full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules and the decisions of the Sponsor, which are final and binding. Winning a prize is contingent upon being compliant with these Official Rules and fulfilling all other requirements set forth herein.

4. Contest Period

The Contest begins on August 1, 2023, at 12:00 a.m. Eastern Standard and ends on January 10, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard (the Contest Period). Entries that are submitted before or after the Contest Period will be disqualified. Submissions will be accepted for the duration of the Contest using any of the following methods: Online only (Google form).

5. How to Enter

Online: This method of entry will be available by visiting our website (http://flintliteracynetwork.org) and following the directions provided to fill out the entry information and submit it online through a Google form.

  • Read the full Contest Guildine

 

  • Create an original short story 
    • Write a story, of no more than 500 words

OR

  • Perform and record a story on video, no more than 5 minutes

AND/OR

  • Design an illustration of your story

 

  • Complete the Contest Entry Google form
  • Upload your written story or video to the Google form
  • Upload illustration, one per story, if desired (Note: illustrations will be judged and awarded prizes separately)
  • Submit the completed Contest Entry Google form

 

The story can be any fictional or non-fictional genre. One main character is required. The story must have a distinct beginning, middle, and ending. A moral or conclusion must be included and stated, either at the beginning or end. Acceptable storytelling styles are written works or oral performances. 

Written entry acceptable forms are a virtual document (word, Google Doc., Notepad, PDF) or a clear picture or scan of a paper printed legibly by hand.

Acceptable illustration styles include pencil, colored pencil, pastels, charcoal, paint, and watercolors. Illustration-acceptable forms are clear pictures or scans of original artwork.

***If we cannot view the entrant’s video submission, read the written submission, or clearly see the submitted illustration image, we will attempt to contact the entrant via the telephone or email provided and ask for a resubmission. If a re-submission is not completed within two weeks from the competition end date, your entry will be disqualified.  

Limit one (1) written or video and one (1) illustrative entry per person for the duration of the Contest Period. Entries received from any person in excess of the stated limitation will be void. All entries are the property of the author or owner and can only be reproduced by FGLN with the express written permission of the author/owner.

Team entries (more than one storyteller) are considered one entry and will be considered a singular contestant for prize distribution purposes.

6. Prize Winnings

On or about January 10, 2024, a panel of volunteers will select potential winners through an adjudicated process. Selection criteria for the written and oral storytelling portion include:

  • Execution of the Statement on Summer Adventure
  • Execution of fictional genre
  • Originality
  • Creativity
  • Fluency
  • Writing Style
  • Grammar and Punctuation
  • Sound Quality
  • Visual Quality
  • Does not exceed the maximum length or word limit

Selection criteria for the illustration portion include:

  • Interpretation of the Theme
  • Level of Creativity 
  • Level of Originality
  • Quality of the Artwork 
  • Artistic Skill Demonstrated
  • Visual Quality

FGLN will attempt to notify the potential winners via the telephone or email provided on or about January 25th. If the potential winner cannot be contacted within five (5) days after the date of the first attempt to contact him/her, FGLN may select an alternate potential winner in his/her place from eligible entries.

7. Winner Notification

The potential winners will be notified by email or phone. Each potential Grand and First Prize winner (parent/legal guardian if a minor in his/her state of residence) will be required to complete, electronically sign, and submit a Declaration of Compliance within five (5) days of the date notice or attempted notice is sent, in order to claim his/her prize. If a potential winner cannot be contacted or fails to submit the Declaration of Compliance within the required time period (if applicable), or the prize is returned as undeliverable, the potential winner forfeits the prize. If the potential winner is at least 18 but still considered a minor in his/her jurisdiction of residence, FGLN reserves the right to award the prize in the name of his/her parent or legal guardian, who will be required to sign the Declaration of Compliance on the potential winner's behalf and fulfill any other requirements imposed on winner set forth herein. Potential winners must continue to comply with all terms and conditions of these Official Rules, and winning is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements. In the event that a potential winner is disqualified for any reason, FGLN will award the applicable prize to an alternate winner among all remaining eligible entries. Only three (3) alternate drawings will be held, after which the prize will remain un-awarded. Prizes will be fulfilled approximately 5-6 weeks after the conclusion of the Contest.

9. General Conditions

In the event that the operation, security, or administration of the Contest is impaired in any way for any reason, including, but not limited to fraud, virus, bug, worm, unauthorized human intervention, or other technical problem, or in the event the Contest is unable to run as planned for any other reason, as determined by FGLN or its fiscal sponsor in its sole discretion, FGLN or its fiscal sponsor may, in its sole discretion, either (a) suspend the Contest to address the impairment and then resume the Contest in a manner that best conforms to the spirit of these Official Rules or (b) terminate the Contest and, in the event of termination, award the prize at random from among the eligible, non-suspect entries received up to the time of the impairment. FGLN and its fiscal sponsor reserve the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or to be acting in violation of these Official Rules or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to damage the website or associated digital tools to undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, FGLN and its fiscal sponsor reserve the right to seek damages (including attorneys fees) and any other remedies from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. Failure by FGLN or its fiscal sponsor to enforce any provision of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.

10. Documentation Release

By participating in this contest, entrants authorize the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network and its Affiliates to use and reproduce submitted names, likenesses, voices, statements, and activities,  herein collectively ("My Recording"), which may be in the form of digital images, documents, or visual or audio recordings.  It is understood that these recordings may be posted to FGLN’s social media sites and used for education and promotional purposes only. It is understood that written entries will not be reproduced without the author/owner’s express written permission.

11. Release and Limitations of Liability

By participating in the Contest, entrants agree to release and hold harmless FGLN and its fiscal sponsor, and each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising and promotion agencies, other companies associated with the Contest, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees, representatives, and agents (the Released Parties) from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of participation in the Contest or receipt or use of the prize (including any travel or activity related thereto), including, but not limited to: (a) any technical errors associated with the Contest, including lost, interrupted or unavailable Internet Service Provider (ISP), network, server, wireless service provider, or other connections, availability or accessibility or miscommunications or failed computer, satellite, telephone, cellular tower or cable transmissions, lines, or technical failure or jumbled, scrambled, delayed, or misdirected transmissions or computer hardware or software malfunctions, failures or difficulties; (b) unauthorized human intervention in the Contest; (c) mechanical, network, electronic, computer, human, printing or typographical errors; (d)application downloads, (e) any other errors or problems in connection with the Contest, including, without limitation, errors that may occur in the administration of the Contest, the announcement of the winner, the cancellation or postponement of the event and/or the flyover, if applicable, the incorrect downloading of the application the processing of entries application downloads or in any Contest-related materials; or (f) injury, death, losses or damages of any kind, to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrants participation in the Sweepstakes or acceptance, receipt or misuse of the prize (including any travel or activity related thereto). Entrant further agrees that in any cause of action, the Released Parties' liability will be limited to the cost of entering and participating in the Contest, and in no event shall the Entrant be entitled to attorneys fees. Released Parties are also not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by site users, tampering, hacking or by any equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest. Entrant waives the right to claim any damages whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct, or indirect damages.

12. Disputes

Except where prohibited, each entrant agrees that any and all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of, or connected with, the Contest or any prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by the appropriate court located in Michigan. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation, and enforceability of these Official Rules, Entrants' rights and obligations, or the rights and obligations of FGLN and its fiscal sponsor in connection with the Sweepstakes, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of Michigan, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules, which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than Michigan.

13. Privacy

Information collected from entrants is subject to FGLN and fiscal sponsors' privacy policy.

14. Winner List

The Names of the Winners will be posted on our website and the grand prize winners in each category may be posted on our social media channels.
