When you take a deep breath and relax, your creative juices flow. Actually, our most creative time happens when we’re sleeping! So if you’re having a hard time using your imagination, stop and take some time to breathe. Let your mind unwind and relax. You may even take a nap if you feel like it. But be sure to keep a notepad and pen handy for when those eureka moments happen!
BE FLEXIBLE
Perhaps you really wanted to write a mystery but it’s just not coming along the way you’d like. Maybe you started off writing a story but now you would rather film yourself telling the story instead. The creative process can be complex, so be flexible with your expectations of yourself and your work. If you are open to new ideas, you will discover themes or characters you may not have thought of if you had stuck to just one way of thinking or idea. Let your creativity increase!
ASK FOR HELP
Even the best heroes and heroines can’t do everything on their own. Ask for help from a friend or trusted adult. They can help you “brain bounce”, or think of new ideas when you’re just getting started or if you hit a roadblock. They can help you review and edit your story. They can help you get the right tools to create your story. They may even have tips for writing or storytelling. Also, know that your local librarian is a great resource for getting help with things like this. Plus, if you have any issues with submitting your entry, you can contact us at usiddiqui1@mcc.edu. It’s good to know there are lots of people to help when you need it!
SEEK INSPIRATION
The best stories have been inspired by someone or something else. So, don’t be afraid to seek inspiration from people or things around you. You can be inspired by things like a good book, a great film, or your favorite artist’s work. Your inspiration could also come from nature, real-life situations, or even a dream. Almost anything can be a source to spark your imagination! So get out and get inspired!
BE YOU
The best way to be creative is to be yourself. Stories, artwork, and all creative things are simply extensions of ourselves. When a person’s authentic self comes through in their work, it lets others know that this work is original and one-of-a-kind. Plus, we feel good when we are being true to ourselves. So, let your true self show throughout this process and you will end up creating a masterpiece that you are proud of. This is a great opportunity to just be you!
HAVE FUN
Whichever tier you choose to do, make sure you have fun doing it. Following the other tips above will help with any roadblocks that happen when creating your story, video, or artwork. Relaxing, involving friends and family, being flexible, letting your story come to life, and seeking inspiration from the world around you are all great ways to ensure this process becomes something that brings you joy. Let your imagination loose and you will always have fun!
