What the Eyes Don’t See is the inspiring story of how Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, alongside a team of researchers, parents, friends, and community leaders, discovered that the children of Flint, Michigan, were being exposed to lead in their tap water—and then battled her own government and a brutal backlash to expose that truth to the world. At the center of the story is Dr. Mona herself—an immigrant, doctor, scientist, and mother whose family’s activist roots inspired her pursuit of justice.

The Community Read events are scheduled on the second Saturday of each month from 11am – 1pm in the months of October 2019 through March 2020 at various locations throughout the Flint community. These events offer a series of facilitated discussions to bring interested individuals together to carefully read this book and share opinions and experiences related to the challenging topics it presents. The Community Read facilitators will guide participants to boldly examine issues of race and racism, misguided austerity policies, broken democracy, and bureaucratic indifference and will connect the discussions to participants experiences.  This event is free and open to the public.

Other Great Michigan Read events are being hosted across the state. Visit the Michigan Humanities Council website for more information:
